Alder Hey Children’s Hospital – Catkin and Sunflower mental health building.

This building is the second building in the Alder Hey Park. The mental health building is both a day care and secure unit for Children’s mental health.

My involvement was to create sculptures, way finding graphics and wall and glass designs. There was a desire to tie this new building with the main hospital and with the sculptures and designs I had created there. I worked with the children and staff on ideas and my feeling with the Catkin Centre and Sunflower House was to create calm and intermate work. I created small bronze sculptures situated on window seats looking out into the courtyards. The glass designs are of wild flowers along with wall designs of figures within a green colour pallet. On the roof I placed two turquoise birds and two chicks, one chick up on the roof the other on a bench at the entrance for people to sit beside. In the entrance reception area there is a fox on the bench echoing the fox in the main hospital.
