Boulders | Cafe | Dog in Brush | I've told you once... | Large Tin Work | Raft | The Overcoat | Small Installations with Figures | Early Works

I have always made things. Finding materials and inventing methods to create sculptures. I use found objects, discarded materials, sheet metals -specifically tin cans and ceramic. Inspiration comes from observing around me, keeping a note book with me to record people, places, animals, atmospheres, scenarios and narratives. Sometimes ideas hang around and only come through into the work at a different time. Humour features and can occur when I might not expect. With these smaller works and installations my aim , increasingly is to create them closely to or at the same time as an idea. In fact to be influenced by the physical making to find new paths and ideas. Alongside these smaller works I produce larger sculptures in bronze, cast iron, plaster polymers and copper for site specific public spaces.

boulders

The series 'Boulders' came after trips to the Jurassic coast, there coming across one boulder on an isolated pebbled beach. As often happens, I find this connects with previous explorations into creating works with boulders and rocks. I am drawn to the surprise of them, the bewilderment as to how they got there, the enormity of time past. Looking for interesting fossils and stones connects with all my foraging, in the street or in nature.

'DOGS'

I have made a lot of dogs over the years and their relationship with people. I over heard someone saying to their dog in the park `if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a hundred times’. This sparked a series of pieces depicting hapless dogs and their disillusioned owners.

THE OVERCOAT

The Overcoat series of works was inspired by the Nikolai Gogol story. I had seen a silent film of the book many years ago and it stuck in my mind,
